Rapid Response Fund will support local and national efforts to support communities impacted by hatred and gun violence
The tragic events in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio horrified the nation, compounding the unfurling tragedy of 250 mass murders in this country so far this year. Gun violence in America, fueled by a rising tide of white nationalist rhetoric, is devastating communities across the country. As communities grieve, national leaders refuse to enact common sense gun laws to protect all Americans.
Early in 2019, the Amalgamated Foundation launched the Hate is Not Charitable campaign in response to documentation that millions of dollars were going to hate groups each year through donor advised funds. The response was enormous with more than 75 foundations, donor networks and nonprofits signing on to stop the flow of financial support to hatred and violence.
Given the Foundation’s focus in combating hate, moments such as this compel us to act. The Foundation has launched a Rapid Response Fund with a seed contribution of $25,000 to provide funding to groups on the front lines in local communities and to those advocating for safer communities and fighting hate speech at the national level. The Rapid Response Fund will support Community groups in El Paso and Dayton, Guns Down America to organize a corporate response to combat gun violence, and Change the Terms Coalition to combat on-line white nationalist hate speech.
